In Square Foot Gardening the garden area is broken down into one square foot sections with the most common garden being 4′ wide and 4′ long raised beds. Each square foot contains one species of plant (generally). In our first gardens we have four four foot beds containing carrots, beets, lettuce, spinach with two varieties of onions placed as a border. Some marigolds and nasturums will fill in to aid in pest control.
Each box is made from 2″ x 10″ x 16′ lumber cut into 4′ lengths and butt joined with two 21/2″ screws. Weed paper was laid down and box filled with a good compost. The cost is ~ $13.00US for the lumber (at Lowes, and they cut them for me). The soil is about $10.00US per box (1/2 cu yard). We purchased the soil in bulk at 44.00 per 2 cubic yards.
We are planning several more boxes and should have some to show later this week, stay tuned!
Update:
Two weeks later, we have completed the 2 4×10′ boxes and two more 4×4′ boxes. This weekend we will get the soil and plant them, adding another couple of odd shaped gardens to complete the plan.
Above I’ve added some pics of the plants at 14 days post planting.
